Katie's Story
Meet Katie, Lead Learning Disability Liaison Nurse for Primary Care.
“Helping people with a learning disability work towards a more equal life is what makes this job so meaningful.”
What’s your role?
I lead a team of nurses who support adults with a learning disability or autism to access primary healthcare, things like GP appointments, health checks and referrals.
Our job is to make sure people aren’t excluded or disadvantaged when using these services. We work closely with local GPs across Surrey and north east Hampshire to break down barriers, reduce health inequalities and improve access for everyone.
What does a typical day look like?
Every day is different, but most often it’s a mix of training and referrals.
We run virtual training sessions for healthcare colleagues, including GPs, practice nurses and staff from across the Trust, to improve understanding and confidence in supporting people with learning disabilities.
We also respond to referrals. These might come from:
• A healthcare professional supporting someone who’s struggling to access their GP
• A GP who wants advice on how to better support a patient with a learning disability
• A person with a learning disability or their family, who’ve had a difficult experience in primary care
Our team bridges the gap to make sure everyone gets the care they need.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The best part is helping people with a learning disability to live more equally, and knowing that our work leads to better experiences when they reach out for healthcare support.
