Deepika's Story
Meet Deepika, Assistant Psychologist working in the Older People’s Mental Health team at Farnham Road Hospital.
I love that I’m constantly learning, not just from colleagues but from the people we support. There’s something new to take away every day.
What’s your role at SABP?
I’m an Assistant Psychologist working in the Older People’s Mental Health team at Farnham Road Hospital. Our ward mainly supports people over the age of 65 with functional mental health conditions, however we also work with patients who have dementia or require a dementia diagnosis during their stay.
I help patients understand their difficulties and collaborate with the wider team to develop personalised care plans and interventions, taking into account their needs, history, and the support available through families and carers.
Describe a typical day
My role combines both clinical and administrative responsibilities. Clinically, I work one-to-one with people using our services delivering psychological interventions, monitoring progress through outcome measures, and supporting discharge planning. I also facilitate several ward groups such as relaxation and coping skills groups, psychoeducation sessions, and cognitive stimulation therapy - a structured, evidence-based group intervention designed to improve memory, thinking and social interaction in people with mild to moderate dementia.
Administratively, I attend ward meetings and trust-wide psychology meetings, maintain the referral database, and develop positive behavioural support (PBS) plans. I gather information from families and carers to gain a full picture of each person we see, and liaise with professionals in the community, social care, and care homes to ensure smooth transitions after discharge. Report writing and risk planning are also key parts of my day.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The best part of my job is simply being with the people using our services. I genuinely enjoy seeing them each day and it’s what motivates me. I also love that I’m constantly learning, not just from colleagues but from the people we support. There’s something new to take away every day.
