Meet Dr Peter Bors, our Consultant Psychiatrist on Polaris Ward at Silverwood.
Dr Bors shares his story of an international doctor’s journey to the UK, from relocating and registering with the GMC, to finding the right support at Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and growing into a Consultant role.
From my first email to my first day at work, I felt supported and valued. This Trust doesn’t just recruit international doctors, it helps you grow into the role you aspire to.
Relocating to the UK and starting work with Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has been a significant and rewarding step in my professional journey.
Coming from a European Union country, I already held the necessary qualifications. This made the process of registering with the General Medical Council (GMC) relatively smooth. I translated and certified my academic documents and passed the Occupational English Test (OET) by autumn 2023.
Once I was added to the GMC's Specialist Register, I began applying for roles that matched my background. At first, I wasn't aware that I needed Advisory Committee (AC) Approval to take up a Consultant position. This led to some setbacks and declined applications.
But things changed when I came across job adverts for Silverwood Hospital. I reached out directly to Dr Anand Mathilakath, Associate Medical Director, to learn more about the opportunities.
Dr Mathilakath was very approachable and supportive. He explained the requirements around Consultant roles and pointed me toward a Senior Specialist position that aligned well with my experience.
I applied and was invited to an interview in February 2024. The panel was warm and professional. They created a supportive atmosphere while carefully assessing my skills and knowledge.
Not long after, I was offered the role.
From that point on, The trust's HR team guided me every step of the way. Their clear communication and well structured onboarding process helped me feel settled and confident in my new role.
I started working three months after my interview and have continued my journey with the trust ever since. With support from the team, I later gained AC approval and now work as a Consultant.
Looking back, I've felt genuinely supported at every stage. This trust really values motivated and skilled doctors. If you're committed to delivering high-quality care, Surrey and Borders Trust gives you the space to grow, guidance to navigate the system and the opportunity to reach your goals.
