VRT is mapped in full to the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) training accreditation standards and is a collaboration of a number of evidence based approaches and principles at all primary, secondary and tertiary levels. At the primary stage, VRT guides staff through See, Think, Act; the DoH/RCPsych produced relational security framework that enhances knowledge, understanding and reflection of patients and of the environment, and the translation of that information into appropriate responses and care. For secondary and non-restrictive tertiary interventions VRT offers interactive, engaging and practical training in de-escalation strategies through a combination of case studies, professional videos and live scenarios based on the comprehensive research by Owen Price et al from the University of Manchester. At the final tertiary stage, underpinning legislation, guidance and a consideration of medical risks is provided, followed by physical interventions that have been thoroughly pressure tested, risk assessed and evidenced in clinical practice to ensure that the techniques are relevant, practical, trauma informed and as safe as possible for both service users and staff.
