Description
The NHS long term plan focuses on the importance of preventing avoidable illness and more active management of the health of the population. Treating tobacco dependence is specifically identified as a key service that can improve the prevention of avoidable illness. It suggests that existing tobacco dependency services can be redesigned to better support patients who are looking to quit smoking as well as those affected by second-hand smoke.
Smoking-related illness puts a considerable strain on NHS resources. In 2015/16 474,000 hospital admissions and 79,000 deaths were caused by smoking.
These 1-day workshops are delivered face-to-face, covering key points of the Trust’s smoke-free policy and highlighting the expectations of staff and managing the expectations of people who use our inpatient our community services.
These workshops will cover the following topics:
- Very brief advice VBA (completed online prior to workshop)
- Smoke free policy overview
- Completing a smoking assessment
- Advance care plan overview
- Stop Smoking Medication (NICE) pathways and protocols
- Impacts of smoking in physical health (inpatients staff)
- Know how to deliver very brief advice on second-hand smoke and Offer patients and clients practical support for making their homes and cars smokefree (community Staff)
Please gain agreement first from your line manager and ensure you keep your chosen date free so that you are able to attend the session.
Intended Audience:
All frontline workers in inpatient settings and community settings, regardless of their occupational group.
